I haven't wanted to write a blog about Steve Irwin, since most everyone else has. But I watched the tribute to him at Australia Zoo that was on Animal Plant. All I have to say is this:

Paying for college is bullshit. Well, paying for it isn't exactly bullshit, but the costs of college are bullshit. If you want to be exact.
"University presidents often blame rising tuition costs on stagnant state funding or lagging private support following the 2000-01 recession and stock market decline. But actually, tuition increases have exceeded inflation for at least four decades, including in periods when state funding and private support were rapidly growing.
The real reasons tuition has risen sharply are two-fold: a steady increase in demand for higher education and a lack of market discipline by colleges and universities, most of which are non-profits. Demand for higher education has grown because of rising incomes and population as well as the higher salaries college graduates earn."
Richard Vedder, PhD NPR.org, May 23, 2005
I can understand a lot of the points in raising the cost of education. But at this point, when I'm feeling the pinch of paying for college all on my own through student loans and no government assistance, I cannot completely understand why. Then what is so ironic about that is student loans are increasing the costs of college. On top of this, the costs of out-of-state tuition for me is $6,260 more than in-state tuition. I think that is completely ridiculious.
Now to the point of my post, college students face so many problems and issues today and now more than ever. It's amazing any of us survive. I worry about money, my mental health, and finding out who I am and what I want to be in the choas of everything. I am in the process of finding my niche in the world and I'm constantly wanting to crack under the pressure of everything. And this week I find out I am not recieving financial aid and it's going to cost me around $10,000 to pay for my education for this one semester. I want to crumble. But I won't. I have so much invested in this school, this area, this place I've made home for the last year. I cannot possibly contemplate going somewhere else, or back home to Illinois. Especially without him.
And I know they say money can't make you happy, but it sure as hell can help.

[01 Sep 2006|09:32am] |
Classes have started this week. The first class I had on Monday was World Civilization 2. There's not much to say about that, except that it's required. Oh, and on it's second day, the fire alarm went off, so it was over half way through. My second class was Geology, which is also required. I think this class will be fairly interesting, because I have always liked this type of stuff. I don't find it boring. My professor looks like he's 25. But I'm sure he's older than that. And I bet 90% of the girls in my class find him attractive. lol.
Tuesday I had my history class and political science class. The first one was History of Ireland: 1700 - present and it looks as though it might be difficult. The reading is rather boring, but you'll have that with most classes. Also, my professor is a very loud talker. That class is at 8 in the morning. I have Issues in Contempary Politics, which is pretty self explainatory. I'm fairly knowledgeable about current politics and issues. So, I don't think this will be a difficult class.
I also have an online class, Intro to Web Programming I, which I'm really excited about. I think I have a firm grasp on it already, so I think it'll be pretty easy for me. Obviously, I have experience already. The professor is a little weird. We'll see how this semester goes. I plan on getting all A's. Let's just hope I don't get lazy.

| Anything Goes |
[17 Aug 2006|02:52am] |
I was reading an article the other day, called 'Skinterns: Shedding Clothes in Hopes of Landing a Job' about interns on Capitol Hill wearing skimpy clothes. Along the lines of interns wearing, "...skimpy tank tops, jeans, short skirts and flip-flops..." It also talks about how women freshly out of college wearing not a whole lot trying to get noticed in order to land a job at the end of the summer.
In the article, Tory Johnson, founder and CEO of Women for Hire stated that my generation, "...don't have the same sense of respect for hierarchy or authority as older generations do." I have to agree with that statement. My generation is the Anything Goes generation.
All through out my life, all that was heard, seen, and talked about was the statement that 'Sex Sells'. The imagery and language of my generation contained one word: sex. I find it ridiculous that people can get away with dressing the way they described these interns as dressing. These are young women just entering the workforce, a workforce I will enter in just a few years. Is this what I have to subject myself to, to get a job? Show a hell of a lot of skin? And that got me onto a whole other topic about people my age.
I feel as though my generation is lazy, sexed up, and looking for the easiest way to get rich. We can get away with anything, thus the title, Anything Goes. I feel as though we get everything given to us, without even working hard for it. Now I am not saying all of us are that way. Plenty of people work their asses off for what they've got, including me. But what about the all the Paris Hiltons out there of a lesser fame? You see it all day long on MTV shows like 'My Super Sweet Sixteen' and 'Laguna Beach' to name just a few shows. We sit there yelling at the TV screen saying, "This is ridiculous! Look how spoiled they are."
But this is what is molding our generation. And I don't know if I like where we're heading.
